Kiss and Tell Us: What's the First Movie You Fell in Love With?

When you hear that noise, there’s a good chance your child just saw someone kissing. Kids don’t like kissing – not when their parents do it, not when Aunt Helen comes to visit, and definitely not between two actors on a big screen. Until they do. When exactly is the moment when a girl goes from kissing disgust to kissing envy?
I was no girly girl growing up but I remember the movie that swept my heart into the possibilities of love: Somewhere in Time. Today I recognize it is a solid two-star movie but back then the heavy-handed Rachmaninoff score, the lack of explanation, and the fact that this was a love story about grown-ups didn’t matter to me. I watched this romance over and over on HBO, my tweenage self fully getting the message that love is so powerful, it can transport you through TIME!
The over-the-top romantic clichés in the trailer for Winter’s Tale gave me a quiver of hope that maybe this time-bending romance could be a similar touchstone for my daughter, Riley. While the movie deals more with purpose, destiny and demons, it is chock-full of swoon-worthy dialogue. Ultimately, my seventh grader flung her hands over her eyes during the steamy parts and deemed it “weird”-- so maybe this isn’t her romance.
She’ll find her own, but let’s hear from you: What was the first movie you fell in love with?
Here are three movies to see with your kids this weekend:
Everything is awesome. For all ages. For real.
Teen girls will love the quick wit of royal vampire protector Rose Hathaway. Parents will not love Rose’s jacked-up cleavage, foul mouth or, shall we say, “easiness.”
As my 12-year-old daughter says, "Frozen is the new thing. Everyone just wants to sing the songs." Here is your chance to do so with Elsa, Anna and Olaf.
