Kerry Washington to Lead Tarantino's 'Django Unchained'

Though Quentin Tarantino initially wanted to discover a new actress for the lead female role in his new film Django Unchained, his heart kept leading him back to an early choice of his in actress Kerry Washington, who after a long, hard casting search has officially landed the role of Broomhilda, according to Deadline. Washington will play a long suffering slave whose husband (Jamie Foxx) is freed from slavery by a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) and then trained in the art of exacting his revenge upon those who done him wrong. He also assists him in his quest to find and rescue his wife, who's being held captive by the film's villain, Calvin Candie, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The film begins production soon, with a December 25th, 2012 release date already set. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Samuel L. Jackson are among the film's other stars, with Don Johnson, Kurt Russell, Treat Williams and others rumored to be involved. Washington brings a whole lot of diversity to the table, having starred in a number of roles that have required the actress to get a bit dirty, so to speak. She can play beautiful, intense, gritty -- you name it, she can do it. Though her film choices haven't been as spectacular over the years, Django Unchained should provide the actress with her moment in the spotlight and a potential invite to the Academy Awards. This girl has range, and we're definitely curious to see what she does in the hands of Tarantino.

What do you think of the casting choice?
