Last week the world was forever changed after it was announced that Oscar-winning director Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) would be making a 3D movie based on the life of Justin Bieber. Mixing in live performances from his current tour, the film was said to track The Bieber from his days as a regular kid uploading his own homegrown music to YouTube all the way up to the international sensation he is today.
Shortly after the announcement, Guggenheim – citing scheduling conflicts with the promotional tour for his documentary Waiting for Superman – backed out of directing, leaving Biebs in search of someone cool enough to take over. Now, thankfully, someone has come to the rescue – and that someone just happens to be John Chu, who’s the guy behind Step Up 2: Back to the Streets and Step Up 3D.
What’s interesting about this new info is that it confirms at least one fact: We will not be seeing Justin Bieber playing Justin Bieber in recreated scenes of his own life, a la Eminem in 8 Mile. Speaking about the movie, Chu says, “Most people don't know that his is a true underdog story, and I hope to tell it in a compelling, genuine way, using all source materials available to convey his tale of becoming an icon for this digital age.” Did you catch the part about him using all source materials? Sounds like he’ll be cutting together Bieber’s old YouTube videos and mixing it with live performance and backstage footage.
So, unfortunately, no 8 Mile 2. But Bieber fans should find plenty to sink their teeth into come early next year when this sucker is slated to hit theaters.
