During the Walt Disney Investors Conference Call, it was announced that Joss Whedon will write and direct the sequel to The Avengers. Whedon will also help develop a Marvel TV show for ABC.
Locking in Whedon for the sequel to The Avengers will allow him to work with Marvel and the various writers and directors of the Phase 2 line of films which begins with Iron Man 3 next year and is capped by The Avengers 2, sometime in 2015.
The other Marvel Phase Two films include Thor: The Dark World, due November 8, 2013, Catpain America: The Winter Soldier, due April 14, 2014 and Guardians of the Galaxy, slated for August 1, 2014. There's still the outside chance that Ant-Man could make it into the 2014 line-up, though nothing has been confirmed or announced.
Rumor has it that Guardians will feature the team fighting an evil race called the Badoom, and in the process, they would supposedly travel back in time and cross paths with some of the Avengers team. Guardians of the Galaxy is expected to serve as the precursor for The Avengers 2.
The Avengers was released in May and went on to gross $1.46 billion en route to the third highest box office total of all time.
There's no word on what the Marvel TV show will be. Guillermo del Toro is currently on hold for the Hulk TV series that he's producing. One might think that Whedon could be the big time writer Del Toro has been waiting for. Then again, there's also the possibility of The Runaways, a series that has long been rumored for the big screen, to be adapted into a television series. Of the two scenarios, The Ruanways certainly seems to make more sense.
For now, rejoice and breath a sign of relief that Mr. Whedon is returning to deliver us a second Avengers movie in a few years.
