Jon Hamm Joins the 'Despicable Me' Spinoff, 'Minions'
Jon Hamm is trading his Mad Men for some pint-sized yellow men.
The smooth-voiced, handsome actor will lend his talents to Minions, the planned spinoff to the Despicable Me franchise that’s aiming for a December 2014 release date.
Deadline reports that Hamm will play off of Sandra Bullock in the animated sequel. The duo will play a husband-and-wife team of evil-doers who recruit three disgruntled minions in their mission to take over the world. The spinoff will be set in the 1960s – suggesting that minions have been around since the dawn of time – meaning that Hamm will still dabble in the past to create contemporary characters.
I’m taking this as a very good sign for July’s Despicable Me 2, because Universal likely wouldn’t be exploring the possibility of an animated spinoff if they thought the Despicable Me franchise had no legs. The immediate sequel follows Steve Carell’s Gru as he learns to be a better father while also confronting a shadow organization orchestrating the battle between good and evil. And if you like that, then you’ll have Minions coming to theaters shortly after.
Despicable Me 2 opens in theaters on July 3. Minions is shooting for a Dec. 19, 2014. Here’s the latest Despicable trailer. Are you looking forward to both?
