Buzz is definitely in the air following the big announcement earlier this week that Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, The Departed) would be directing a Frank Sinatra biopic for Universal after winning the approval from Sinatra’s notoriously hard-to-handle family. But now that the news has hit, folks are wanting to know who the studio will choose to play such an iconic role.
Initial buzz, of course, pegs Leonardo DiCaprio as a lead candidate – mainly because he’s been Scorsese’s go-to man for a whole bunch of films lately (Gangs of New York, The Departed, Aviator and the upcoming Shutter Island), but also because he’s one of only a few A-list actors capable of pulling it off. Now, though, it looks like DiCaprio has a little competition, as Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood (who initially broke the Sinatra biopic story) is saying that Universal might want Johnny Depp to play Sinatra because they were so pleased with his performance in this summer’s Public Enemies.
Depp would be an inspired choice, and it’d be great to watch him work alongside Martin Scorsese, one of film’s great directors. Remember, Depp held his own in Sweeney Todd – performing all the songs himself – which would make him a leading contender should the studio and Scorsese be looking for an actor who can belt out a tune or several.
What say you? What do you think of Depp as Sinatra?
