Jessica Chastain to Portray Princess Diana in Film About Real-Life Love Affair

This year's breakout actress Jessica Chastain is reportedly set to play the late Princess Diana in Caught in Flight, a controversial love story based on a real-life affair with a heart surgeon that the princess kept under wraps.

To be helmed by German director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall, The Invasion), the story is described as "a love story between a princess locked in a tower and an ordinary man." The film is set to go into pre-production in March 2012 with a projected $15 million budget.

The surgeon, Dr. Hasnat Kahn, met the princess at the Royal Brompton Hospital in 1995 when she was visiting a friend who was recovering from heart surgery. The couple pursued a quiet two-year affair that was supposedly so serious Diana was considering converting to Islam. Dr. Khan kept the affair a secret for 11 years until speaking with UK newspaper The Telegraph in 2008.

The newspaper reported that the princess wore traditional dress when she went to meet his family in Pakistan. The Khans were reportedly deeply religious with wall hangings in their home that featured verses inscribed from the Koran.

Dr. Khan left the UK in 2007 and Diana is said to have been “heartbroken” that he wanted to end the relationship.

According to IndieWire, those who have read the script for Caught in Flight say that the late princess is potrayed unfavorably, basically stalking the doctor until he ends the affair.
