James Cameron to Direct Angelina Jolie in 'Cleopatra'?

Angelina Jolie and James Cameron

Chalk this up as the strangest news you'll hear all week: Apparently, there have been some very early discussions regarding James Cameron potentially directing Angelina Jolie in a 'Cleopatra' movie. Calm down those horses, though, because this thing is far from a done deal. It's still early, and we imagine there are a lot of little details to work out.

We told you about this project awhile back; how Angelina Jolie was potentially set to star as Cleopatra in a film based on the upcoming book 'Cleopatra: A Life'. A script is already in the works, and according to Deadline James Cameron is considering the directing gig. Not really the first guy you'd pick to direct a movie about Cleopatra since her story doesn't automatically feel like some epic 3D event, though Cameron pulled off the period piece well with 'Titanic', and we're sure he'd go to great lengths to bring ancient Egypt to life on the big screen in some spectacular way.
Of course, this also begs the question: What about 'Avatar 2'? Well, based on all the stories about Cameron visiting with tribes and going to Japan, it seems like the filmmaker is in search of a project to take on before tackling 'Avatar 2'. Plus, we think he'll end up shooting both 'Avatar 2' and 3 back-to-back, and so it makes sense for him to dive into something else before taking on that massive challenge.
Still, is this the right project for him? You have to admit it's a little intriguing to see the world's most successful filmmaker team up with arguably the world's most famous actress. Who wouldn't want to see that film?
