Is Kurt Wimmer Writing a 'Point Break' Remake?

A few years ago, rumors began to circulate that a sequel to Point Break was in the works. The planned follow up to Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 cult classic was to be written and directed by original screenwriter Peter Illiff (though that later changed to written by Illiff and directed by Jan de Bont) and was set to feature the return of Patrick Swayze’s surfer/bank robber Bodhi.
Unfortunately, that project never came together – and with Swayze’s untimely passing, it seems likely that we’ll never see a true sequel to Bigelow’s film. That doesn’t mean Point Break can’t be the subject of a remake, though – which is the current rumor making the rounds.
Twitch is reporting that their sources say Singapore-based studio RGM Entertainment - a company that was very involved in the planned sequel - is now actively developing a remake. The basis for the reboor is a new script from screenwriter Kurt Wimmer (screenwriter credits on the Total Recall remake and The Thomas Crowne Affair, as well as the director of cult favorite Equilibrium.) No word yet on who might direct of reprise the iconic roles played by Swayze and Keanu Reeves in the original, but early reports have the new version of the film focusing on surfing and skiing.
The original Point Break found Reeves playing an undercover FBI agent who infiltrates a band of surfers/bank robbers led by Patrick Swayze. We’re not sure the world really needs a Point Break remake, but if this project does come to fruition (and at the moment, we’re filing it under “rumor”), someone needs to make sure Gary Busey is back to reprise his role as Agent Johnny Utah’s partner.
Do you want to see a remake of Point Break or is the original good enough to stand the test of time? Our vote’s with the latter, but with the right cast, we could be swayed to change our mind.
