Is a Third 'X-Files' Movie About to Happen?

Could a third X-Files movie actually happen? It’s sounding more and more likely.

The latest news comes straight from the source: The X-Files creator Chris Carter, who tells Empire Magazine
"I think all of us are interested in putting the band back together. I have an idea for a third movie in my head. The colonization date has passed, and that is something we wouldn't ignore. For the second movie, we only had the budget for a stand-alone story, but we want to go back to the mythology."
What is this “colonization date” Carter speaks of? It’s complicated, but the idea that our planet was eventually going to be colonized by aliens (in some shape or form) was an ongoing theme or subplot of Fox’s cult-favorite television drama. Agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) often came close to understanding the true meaning of the colonization project – which often led them back to a shadow group called the Syndicate. The last we heard, the scheduled date for our planet’s colonization from an outside, alien species was supposed to be December 22, 2012.
Well, that didn’t happen. But a new movie might.
During the reunion panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Carter, Duchovny and Anderson made frequent mention of a third movie. They all expressed interest, but escaped the panel without confirming anything.

Today, Carter proclaiming that the ball is in 20th Century Fox’ court makes it seem like a sequel is… let’s say “closer,” and not yet “inevitable.” Usually one of the hurdles is getting everyone involved interested. But they all sound interested. It must be a numbers game. The original 1998 film earned an impressive $83 million in the U.S., but the 2008 sequel topped out at $20.9 million, suggesting that interest in the franchise might be fading.

Still, Hollywood LOVES a redemption project, and nostalgia currently fuels some of our biggest upcoming tentpoles. (Star Wars, anyone?) So there’s hope for a third X-Files movie. And if it happens, Carter says he’d like to somehow get Simon Pegg involved.
"Gillian [Anderson] worked with Simon Pegg on a movie and told me that he was a big fan,” Carter said. “We actually thought about putting him in the second movie, but there was no part for him. I certainly would think about him if we were to go forward in any way."
Pegg already helped resurrect Star Trek with J.J. Abrams. He’s often rumored for other massive geek projects, from Star Wars to Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man. We’ll see if he becomes part of an X-Files movie… if it ever happens. But things appear to be moving on a possible sequel. Is it something that you would be interested in seeing?
