While it's been an interesting few months of contract negotiations, you didn't really think the Marvel Universe was going to move forward without Iron Man, did you?
This morning, Marvel released a statement announcing that Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to star in two more Avengers movies as the Armored Avenger. A price tag was not mentioned in the release, but one can imagine at this point Downey may be as rich as his big-screen character Tony Stark.
Joss Whedon, who is currently writing the script for The Avengers 2 has been supporting Downey since contract negotiations began, saying he wouldn't do the sequel without Iron Man.
Indeed, Marvel recognized how valuable Downey is to The Avengers and the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe. His last two films as Iron Man rank as two of the top-five-grossing films of all time, collectively earning more than $2.7 billion worldwide.
The Avengers 2 is slated to begin production in March 2014 and assemble in theaters May 1, 2015.
Marvel also teased in the release that "in the coming days and weeks and months, Marvel.com will be the first in the world to reveal additional casting updates, new characters coming to Marvel movies and so much more." Much of that revelation is likely to occur during Comic-Con in a couple of weeks. Might we see Downey make a grand entrance like he did last year?
Are you excited to hear Downey is back for two more stints as Iron Man?
