'Insidious' Sequel Announces 2013 Release Date

Horror director James Wan has been saying that if he can crack the story behind an Insidious sequel, he’d contemplate directing the film. Well, he must have solved the riddle, because Wan is coming back for Insidious 2 … and the sequel even has a 2013 release date!

FilmDistrict, Alliance Films and Sony have circled Aug. 30, 2013 as the release date for Insidious 2, which Wann will direct, according to a release. Original stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye and Ty Simpkins will return to the franchise, while original screenwriter (and longtime Wan collaborator) Leigh Whannell will resume writing duties. The sequel reportedly will begin production in Los Angeles on Jan. 15.

The first Insidious was a smash hit, earning $97 million against a reported $1.5M budget. Part of me hopes that Wan maintains the low-budget approach to the sequel, though, because a lack of a budget forced the filmmakers to get creative as he searched for scares, and the original Insidious (in my opinion) scared us with the things we didn’t see rather than the obvious jumps from objects meant to creep us out.

No idea yet what the story behind the Insidious sequel will be. The first movie cast Byrne and Wilson as suburban parents plagued by demons when they son falls into a coma-state, inviting a demon into their home. There are so many places that a sequel can go … and in less than a year, we’ll be able to creep into a darkened theater and find out what Wan has in store.

Remarkably, the director also will have The Conjuring in theaters on July 19, 2012. That thriller is from Warner Bros., so if you are a fan of the Saw director, next summer is the one for you.
