Indie Close-Up: Jessica Biel, Jet Li and Some Phone Sex Highlight Indie Films This Weekend

It's a slow weekend of wide releases this weekend, offering movie audiences the perfect opportunity to take in an indie flick or two over the long holiday weekend. Let's see what's arriving in theaters...

For A Good Time, Call…

The latest entry into the R-rated female comedy subgenre finds Ari Gaynor and Lauren Anne Miller starring a polar opposites and past enemies who bond together by opening up a phone-sex business. Justin Long stars as their mutual friend who brings the pair together in this brisk, funny and raunchy comedy.

Flying Swords of Dragon Gate

If you were wondering why there was very little of Jet Li in The Expendables 2, here's your answer. The martial arts movie icon was busy starring in Tsui Hark's 3D action drama which begins a limited two-week IMAX 3D run this weekend. The film features some really good 3D effects and, at one point, finds Li battling an opponent inside a vicious tornado! Check out the fight sequence that leads to the tornado fight, below.

The Bullet Vanishes

If you're in the mood for Asian cinema with more bang rather than sword-slashing and 3D effects, Law Chi-Leung's The Bullet Vanishes may be up your alley. This Chinese period thriller set in 1930's Shanghai boasts both visually stunning production elements as well as a wonderfully clever plot. The story follows a young girl who dies at a bullet factory under mysterious circumstances. Two detectives must investigate the reasons for her death, as well as the strange occurrences that follow, as they themselves become the target of the phantom killer.

The Tall Man

Jessica Biel stars in this indie thriller about a town nurse whose son disappears in the middle of the night by a mysterious entity known as The Tall Man. As she launches into a frantic rescue, her character lives every parent's darkest nightmare in this twisting thriller directed by Pascal Laugier.

The Day

Doug Aarniokski's post-apocalyptic horror flick finds a group of five survivors wandering through the back-roads of a ravaged landscape. Armed with an assortment of weapons, they seek shelter in an abandoned farmhouse. While searching for food, they unwittingly set off a trap signaling ruthless predators who are lying in wait. With ammo and food running low, the group must band together to make one last final over 24 hours (hence the title), battling for their survival. The film stars Shawn Ashmore, Ashley Bell, Dominic Monaghan and Shannyn Sossamon.
