Independent Spirit Award Nominations Announced

It's almost December, which means it's time to get ready for a whole bunch of awards shows leading up to the biggie – the Academy Awards – at the end of February. The Independent Spirit Awards were the first ones out of the gate with nominations, announcing them earlier today. Now, the Spirit Awards are different from, say, the Oscars or the Golden Globes in that the films nominated have to have been produced for under $20 million. Winter's BoneStill a lot of money, sure, but definitely on the smaller end of movie budgets.

This year's big contender looks to be Winter's Bone, which won the Grand Jury at Sundance last year, and it leads the pack here with seven nominations, including Best Feature. Black Swan also snagged four nominations, and the Best Actress category was so packed with talent this year that they upped the nominees from five to six, with folks like Nicole Kidman, Annette Bening and Natalie Portman leading the way.
