Here Comes That ‘Karate Kid’ Sequel

Though no one expected it to do much of anything, this summer’s Karate Kid remake managed to surprise many with its beautiful setting and fun, nostalgic vibe. Naturally that meant a sequel was all but certain, and now it’s looking pretty official. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has tasked Kung Fu Panda writers Cyrus Voris and Ethan Reiff with writing a sequel to the 2010 remake, which, funnily enough, was originally titled The Kung Fu Kid.

'The Karate Kid'

Jaden Smith is expected to return, and in all likelihood Jackie Chan signed on for at least three films from the outset as well. Since the remake changed things up with its China setting (versus Los Angeles, like the original), one wonders whether they’ll reverse it yet again and bring our two martial-arts heroes to the United States (New York seems like it’d be a fun location). Also, depending upon how much Smith ages between now and then, it might be cool to age up the villains and raise the stakes considerably, as the sequel from the original franchise did when Daniel (Ralph Macchio) squared off against his nemesis in a fight to the death.
