Harry Potter Alliance Launches Illiteracy Horcrux

Harry Potter AllianceWhile the Harry Potter movie franchise is soon coming to an end, its legacy in the form of literacy thrives on. The Harry Potter Alliance (HPA), a nonprofit that engages fans in social activism, has just launched its Illiteracy Horcrux – part of its Deathly Hallows campaign that addresses seven real-world Horcruxes or issues facing the world today.

Donate a Book, Build a Library is the slogan calling on anyone who has a book they'd like to donate to create the New Beginnings Charter School's new library. HPA aims to collect at least 20,000 pre-school through young adult (that means Twilight is included!) books for the Brooklyn school. The charter school will name its library the Imagine Better Library – in reference to J.K. Rowling's 2008 Harvard University commencement speech: "We do not need magic to change the world. We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: We have the power to imagine better."
It's pretty awesome that Rowling's work created a decade-long movie franchise, but even more so that her imagination has inspired others to do some real good in the world. You can check out all the details about the Illiteracy Horcrux and where to mail books on HPA's official site. Don't know about you, but being an avid Potter fan, I'd probably keep the Potter books on my own shelves and buy a new set to donate! But I wouldn't mind parting with my copy of The Count of Monte Cristo or Eat Pray Love for others to enjoy. What books would you donate? What would be on your list for a young moviegoer?
