Guy Ritchie to direct ‘300’ Prequel, ‘Xerxes’?

We’ve known for awhile now that Zack Snyder was developing a 300 prequel called Xerxes alongside Frank Miller, who was writing the graphic novel version. It’s been assumed that Snyder would then step in and direct the 300 follow-up, though recent news claims that might not be the case.

Vulture says Warner Bros. has offered the Xerxes directing job to Guy Ritchie, who they’ve successfully brought into the blockbuster fold after hiring him to direct two Sherlock Holmes movies (the second comes out this December). So why did they go to Ritchie and not Snyder? Chances are it’s because Snyder is on Superman right now, and that project will take awhile to piece together (tentative release date is set for December 2012).
If Xerxes is that far along, they may not want to wait till 2013 before Snyder is free to take on something else, especially if Superman is some colossal hit and they want the director to get right to work on a sequel. What it adds up to is Warners needing a new director – someone who’s as stylized as Snyder so that Xerxes has a similar feel to 300. Hence Ritchie, whose visual sensibilities aren’t too far off from Snyder’s.
Do you think Snyder should absolutely direct Xerxes, or are you cool with them bringing in someone new?
