Guillermo del Toro Lets You Peek Into the Soul of the 'Pacific Rim' Robots

Up until now, much of the focus in promoting Pacific Rim has been centered on giant robots battling giant monsters from the sea. We've gotten a brief taste as to how the guts of the robots work in earlier trailers, but now director Guillermo del Toro and the cast of the sci-fi action blockbuster take you inside the guts of the giant robots known as Jaegers.

Essentially, the robots operate with two pilots who are fused with the machine. The way the pilots and the computer interact is known as "The Drift." According to the cast, the process allows the pilots to see the all the memories, good and bad, of their co-pilot, essentially allowing them to, as del Toro puts it, "peek into each other's souls."

Pacific Rim stars Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman and Rinko Kikuchi and is due in theaters July 12. Peek into the new featurette below.
