'Girl Rising' Calls for Audiences to Demand Action (And Screenings)

As summer sinks in and we’re bombarded by box office behemoths, it’s easy to forget that the most awe-inspiring and dramatic stories come not from the Marvel Universe, but rather from real world tales of overcoming adversity. Girl Rising, a powerful documentary from Oscar-nominated director Richard E. Robbins, showcases the wide-reaching transformative power of education by telling the stories of nine different girls from nine developing nations around the globe. Girl Rising enjoyed a limited release in select markets March 7, but being an independent film with a limited budget, the filmmakers decided to partner with Gathr, a new model for theatrical distribution that puts the power to screen a movie in the people’s hands (hey, that’s you!).

Each girl’s story is written by a renowned writer from her native country. Among the nine there's Suma, a young woman once bound into forced servitude who now crusades to free others in Nepal; Wadley, a Haitian girl whose thirst for education compels her to be bold beyond her years; and Amina, a young Afghani woman who braves death threats daily so that she can lift the veil of sexual inequality that has covered women in her society for years. The stories are narrated by the likes of Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Salma Hayek, Anne Hathaway and Freida Pinto. At its core, Girl Rising seeks to empower and educate girls by changing minds, changing lives and changing policy. Robbins is charged with convincing the audience that "educating girls works, that girls matter, and that the situation out here in the developing world is one that we really can affect.”

Social injustice demands change, meaning that you must demand a screening for your community to start the conversation. Click here to find out how to get a Girl Rising screening in your community.
