Earlier this week it was announced that Universal had somehow managed to acquire the rights to make a live-action Barbie movie. Yes, you heard that right – a live-action film based on the popular perfect-looking blonde bombshell of a doll. Obviously the actress who plays Barbie will have to bring her A-game, since the gal has been around since 1959. So which ladies are worthy enough to take on the iconic character? Here are five that might just get the job done, depending on the type of Barbie film Universal feels like shoveling into theaters.
Friday Five: Actresses Who Could Play Barbie
The High School Barbie
Dakota Fanning: At 15 years old, Fanning has really started to blossom into young adulthood, and her tall, thin (and blonde) physique would probably be perfect for Barbie. Fanning would also bring some serious acting chops to the role, giving us a Barbie that's pretty, sure, but also one that's carrying some angsty baggage.
Miley Cyrus: If Universal wants to take their Barbie movie in a High School Musical sort of direction, then why not attempt to steal Miley Cyrus away from Disney and stick her in the role. She's the gal teenagers relate to most these days anyway, so it'd be fitting to see her go Hannah Montana blonde and belt out a few tunes about being accepted and liking everyone no matter what they look like.
The College-Bound Barbie
Amanda Seyfried: This 23-year-old proved she could carry a film this past weekend with the release of Jennifer's Body, and if Universal wants to age their Barbie up a little by sticking her in a plot that has her dodging frat boys and toga parties, then Seyfried – with her blonde hair and wide, trusting eyes -- would be the perfect choice.
The Fresh Out of College Barbie
Scarlett Johansson: Over the years, Barbie has practically done it all at every age – so if this film finds her struggling to find work after graduating with a degree to nowhere, then why not cast Scar-Jo into the part. She might be a little too sexy and sultry for Barbie, but it'd be good for kids to get behind a woman with some curves.
The Career Woman Barbie
January Jones: Currently heating up the small screen as Betty Draper in Mad Men, January Jones would make a perfect adult Barbie. Perhaps she's worked her way up the corporate ladder only to find a deteriorating marriage and a potential drinking problem. Can she keep it all together long enough to make partner at the firm, or will Barbie learn that there's more to life than mansions, men and misery.
Who do you think would make for a great Barbie?
