First Look at Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady' Trailer

Since Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep signed on to portray the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, there’s been a slight buzz that the actress may contend for an Oscar nomination next year. Of course, this speculation was presumably based on Streep’s acting resume that includes 16 Oscar nominations and that actors who previously portrayed prominent British figures scored gold statuettes at Hollywood’s big show (like Colin Firth for last year’s The King’s Speech and Helen Mirren in 2006’s The Queen).

Though the film doesn’t open until mid-December, a teaser trailer was released yesterday through The Guardian website, featuring a pair of aides giving Streep’s Thatcher some advice on her appearance and voice pitch. Certainly not much, but it gives us our first look at Streep in full ‘80’s Prime Minister garb. Interesting to see how the Oscar pundits react to this little nugget of a trailer, though we imagine given Streep’s history with Oscars, they can only be positive.
While The Iron Lady falls under the biopic subgenre, the plot centers on the 17 days leading up to the Falklands War in 1982, told through a series of narrated flashbacks. We can wait to be wow-ed sometime this fall when a full-length trailer should arrive, but for now, check out the trailer below and let us know what you think.
Does Streep nail Thatcher’s speech and look? The Iron Lady arrives in theaters December 16, 2011.
