'Fifty Shades' Shocker: Charlie Hunnam Drops Out of Christian Grey Role

Looks like the search for Christian Grey continues.

Charlie Hunnam, who had been cast in the film last month, has exited the Grey role.

Universal issued the following statement regarding Hunnam's departure from the film:

“The filmmakers of Fifty Shades of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.”

Citing Hunnam's television work load is an expected move, but it's more likely the actor had time to think about the role as well as fan reaction to his casting.

Speaking of fan reaction, this of course reignites the campaign for favorites like Matt Bomer, Michael Fassbender and Ryan Gosling. The likelihood that any of those well-known actors will take on the role is slim, but then again, we never expected Hunnam to drop out of the Grey role to begin with.

Universal will have to move quickly though as production on the film is scheduled to begin next month. The movie is due in theaters on August 1, 2014.

Who do you think should replace Hunnam in the lead role?
