Fanboy Fix: 'Superman' and 'Batman 3'

Christopher Nolan Talks New Superman Movie

In an extensive editing bay interview with Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception), The Los Angeles Times managed to squeeze the first comments on Superman out of the elusive writer-director, admitting that the idea for the new film came out of frustration while working on the script for Batman 3 with Batman co-writer David Goyer, who turned to Nolan during the process and pitched his idea for the Man of Steel. Says Nolan, "I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I've never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way."

For now, Goyer is writing the script, and he may direct (rumors have circulated that Jonah Nolan, Chris' brother and Batman collaborator, may also direct). Nolan, meanwhile, is going to oversee the project since he'll be busy finishing Inception and then moving on to the third Batman film. As far as whether this Superman film will connect to Batman in the same way Marvel is connecting their movies, Nolan shoots that idea down by adding, "Each [film] serves the internal logic of the story. They have nothing to do with each other."

'Batman 3' Will End Nolan's Franchise

We figured it would wrap things up, but those who thought Christopher Nolan would be directing several more Batman films might be disappointed to learn that Batman 3 will not only be the last installment he participates in, but it will also bring an end, storywise, to his Batman franchise. While he looks forward to finally putting an end to it all, Nolan does admit in that same LA Times article that it's becoming hard to figure out how to match or even top The Dark Knight, saying "My brother is writing a script for me and we'll wait to see how it turns out...He's struggling to put it together into the epic story that you want it to be."

No word yet on whether Warner Bros. will continue the Batman franchise after Nolan's next film, or if they'll simply reboot it and try to tie the new one into the next Superman franchise. Either way, good news is that both Batman and Superman are heading back to theaters soon enough. It'll be 3 or so years before we get to actually watch them on the big screen, but us fanboys can wait. We're used to waiting…right?
