Fanboy Fix: 'Avatar' Expands to Three Sequels, 'Pacific Rim' Sequel and Mark Wahlberg's 'Transformers 4' Sword-Gun

If it feels like we've been waiting for a sequel to Avatar for a while now, well, we have. The ground-breaking Oscar-winning action adventure from James Cameron arrived in theaters four years ago. Following its $2.8 billion worldwide gross, rumors of a sequel began to surface. Cameron would later confirm that he was working on not one, but two sequels to round out an Avatar trilogy.

Now it appears Cameron can't get enough of a good thing and announced today that he is packaging the sequels into their own trilogy, with Avatar 2 scheduled to arrive in theaters December 2016. Avatar 3 will follow in December 2017 and Avatar 4 arriving sometime in 2018. The three films will be filmed simulateously beginning next year.

"Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience. In writing the new films, I've come to realize that Avatar's world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on-screen," Cameron said. Keep in mind, this is coming from a guy who isn't shy to give us three-hour-long movies.

Are you excited that Avatar is continuing to expand?

International Box Office Boosts Chances for 'Pacific Rim' Sequel

While Pacific Rim is struggling at the domestic box office, grossing $84 million in three weekends, the international market is certainly picking up the slack. The film, which is budgeted around $200 million due to ILM's costly CGI action sequences, has grossed $140 million internationally. Additionally, China's $9 million Wednesday opening set a record for Warner Bros. and the film was just released today in Spain and Japan, where it has the potential to be huge given the obvious monster-movie and Evangelion themes.

While it had moments that were as clunky as a Jaeger, the film certainly has some great sequences. I'd welcome a second trip through Guillermo del Toro's monsters-vs.-robots world. Would you like to see a sequel to Pacific Rim?

Check Out the Massive Sword on Mark Wahlberg!

Speaking of giant robots, set pics from Transformers 4 featuring Mark Wahlberg carrying a giant sword-gun surfaced online. You can see a couple of them below courtesy of Transformers Live and Just Jared.
