'Expendables 2,' 'Wolverine 2,' Get Directors

Simon West to Helm 'Expendables 2'

Despite earlier rumors that Sylvester Stallone would be leading the testosterone brigade known as "The Expendables" into another firefight, it turns out Sly will be handing over both the writing and directing duties on the sequel. While a writer hasn't been attached yet, we do know that Con Air director Simon West will be taking on directing duties. Stallone is expected to be involved in crafting the overall story for the movie, which will return original Expendables Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Terry Crews, Randy Couture and Mickey Rourke. Bruce Willis is also expected to return as one of the film's antagonists while Jean-Claude Van Damme is still rumored to be a prospective villain.
West seems perfectly suited for this movie, with a list of successful action movies on his resume. He also worked with Statham on this year's Mechanic remake and his involvement can only be a step up from Stallone's directing efforts which garnered a Razzie Award nomination.
What do you think of West directing The Expendables 2?
James Mangold to Direct 'Wolverine 2'
A few years ago, James Mangold was probably one of the hottest directors in the business. Having helmed the Oscar-winning Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line as well as 3:10 to Yuma, Copland, Girl, Interrupted, he certainly wasn't without considerable talent. But then along came Knight & Day, the campy Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz action movie which knocked him down a couple pegs. Now Deadline reports that Fox has offered the directing job for their Wolverine sequel to Mangold and he is expected to accept. Let's not forget, though, that Darren Aronofsky walked away from the movie because the studio wouldn't let him make the movie he wanted, and it's hard to imagine the notoriously control-freaky studio letting Mangold do whatever he wants with this movie. Still, Mangold is a good director and the Wolverine franchise may rebound and get the good movie it deserves. What do you think?
