While a pair of Snow White re-imaginings have been featured as part of this year's slate of films, Disney's Sleeping Beauty re-imagining Maleficent has slowly been coming together. Angelina Jolie was cast a while back as the wicked queen and Sharlto Copley was added last week as the King with rumors that Elle Fanning would play Princess Aurora.
Now, suddenly, there has been a burst of casting activity, with a majority of the cast being filled out.
THR reports that Imelda Staunton and Lesley Manville will play pixies who take care of Princess Aurora. Miranda Richardson has been added as the fairy Queen Ulla, who is also Maleficent's aunt. Sam Riley will play Maleficent's right-hand man who can transform into a raven and Kenneth Cranham will portray a human king hoping to conquer the fairy kingdom. The report also confirms that Fanning will be portraying Aurora.
That's a lot of talent in one movie and raises some interesting questions. We've seen one re-imagining, Mirror Mirror, fizzle at the box office and while the buzz surrounding Snow White and the Huntsman looks promising, is there room for another fairy tale re-imagining? Keep in mind Disney is also pulling together their own Snow White movie.
And with Fanning now confirmed as Aurora, will she be able to hold her own against Jolie's queen or will she be squashed by the screen presence of one of the biggest movie stars in the world?
Maleficent has plenty of time to work out any kinks as it isn't scheduled to hit theaters until March 14, 2014.
