Eli Roth's Earthquake Thriller With Selena Gomez Sparks Bidding War

Eli Roth has been taking more of a behind the scenes approach to filmmaking lately as we saw with The Last Exorcism, and his latest project — which has already sparked a bidding war, according to Deadline — is no different. Roth will present earthquake thriller Aftershock as co-writer, actor, and producer. The Hostel mastermind wrote the script with Guillermo Amoedo and director Nicolas Lopez — a Chilean filmmaker who was inspired to tell the story after his experience with the devastating 2010 earthquake in his home country.

Roth described the project — revolving around a group of inmates who escape from an insane asylum during a massive quake — with enthusiasm:

"This collaboration marks the beginning of what we call Chilewood, making genre films for the global market using all the resources Chile has to offer. We are making a smart elevated disaster genre movie with superb production value, something really big. The film’s going to be very scary, very intense, and very real."

Lopez shared that he wants the twisted disaster thriller to be "[his] Robocop."

This will be Roth's first acting role in a film since he played the Bear Jew, AKA Sgt. Donny Donowitz in Inglourious Basterds, a role in Fruit Chan's Don't Look Up, and a bit part in Piranha as a wet t-shirt contest host. Amusingly, he'll be starring alongside teen pop princess Selena Gomez in Aftershock, who has a cameo in the movie. With the success of Last Exorcism as a kind of blueprint for Roth's producing projects, it's easy to see how Aftershock can possibly duplicate that winning formula.
