Efron, Freeman and Gordon-Levitt Rumored for 'Akira' Movie

After word got out last week that Zac Efron was indeed seriously in contention of stepping into the lead role in the Hughes Brothers live action re-make of Katsuhiro Otomo’s classic post-apocalyptic anime Akira, there's now news of another potential cast member…...

Multiple sites  including Film School Rejects are reporting that Morgan Freeman is rumored to be circling the role of The Colonel, a central character in the story. The character performs experiments on a young man that result in him turning into a giant globular monster. Granted, Freeman is one of the best actors of our time, but as Rejects puts it, he is about “as threatening as a marshmallow.”

The original Akira follows Shotaro Kaneda, a rebellious teenager who leads a motorcycle gang through Neo-Tokyo during World War III. However, the Hollywood version will take place in America. Kaneda is friends with Tetsuo Shima, another troubled teen with psychic powers. Current rumors place Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a possibility for this role.

If the Efron, Gordon-Levitt and Freeman castings are confirmed, the Hughes Brothers seem to be loading up this PG-13 adaptation with as much stunt casting as possible.
What do you think? Are you interested in seeing what this hodge-podge of Hollywood actors and the Hughes Brothers can create, or is this another classic movie that should be left alone?
