Edgar Wright to Direct Johnny Depp in 'The Night Stalker' Reboot

Deadline has just broken news that Edgar Wright has landed his next directing gig: Disney has commited the Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World director to develop their reboot of the '70s TV/movie series The Night Stalker. Johnny Depp, who will star in the film and produce through his Infinitum Nihil company, gave the project life at the Mouse House last summer, but this is the first major development since then.

According to the report, The Night Stalker doesn't even have a writer at this point and Wright has been hand-picked to not only direct, but lay down all the creative tracks for the production to follow-- and that makes us positively giddy. Honestly, we're not intimately familiar with the original series about a tabloid reporter who covered/intervened in all kinds of supernatural crimes, but when the project was first announced we feared it may be yet another Depp/Tim Burton team-up like their Dark Shadows reboot that's well under way. But a Depp/Wright team sounds perfect to us.

But what say you, dear reader who knows more about The Night Stalker than us? Is Edgar Wright a perfect creative match to give the franchise new life? Can you see Johnny Depp as Carl Kolchak?

And who knows, if Disney is happy with what Wright does with Kolchak, maybe they'll finally let him direct Ant-Man for Marvel.
