Early Reaction to Surprise Screening of Paul Thomas Anderson's 'The Master'

It's been five years since Paul Thomas Anderson's last film, the Oscar-winning oil flick There Will Be Blood, which spawned, among other things, the catch phrase, "I drink your milkshake! I drink it up!" Anderson latest film, The Master is set to bow in theaters next month (Sept. 14 to be exact) but that didn't stop the director from surprising the crowd at an American Cinematheque screening of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, Friday night.

Projected in Anderson's preferred format of 70mm, the film was screened for the audience and reaction soon started to leak out onto Twitter. Reaction was pretty positive and we've rounded up a few of the tweets and comments below along with the latest trailer.

"I’m still digesting everything I saw, but it was pretty amazing. It was like a strange fever dream. [But] not audience friendly AT ALL. An ambiguous ending and not one likable character. And without any 'milkshake' lines, it probably won’t have the breakthrough that There Will Be Blood had…" Hollywood Elsewhere

"Don’t want to say more than a few words about it but it is an all around excellent film. I’ve yet to see one bad PSH performance but this one may be his best. 2hrs 10 min. Will get nods for Picture. Good chance of winning original screenplay and acting awards." Victor Escobar

"…All of the things you might be excited about live up to expectations AND MORE. It is never less than visually stunning. The music fits the style perfectly (actually enhances it), and, as I already texted you, actually wavers and strays from the anxiety-inducing percussion to lush and beautiful in some parts. The period detail is impeccable. The production design and costumes are incredible and always believable. Most importantly, of course: The performances are AMAZING. And I don’t use the word ‘amazing’ unless I mean it." Hitfix

"Still absorbing last night’s sneak of #THEMASTER70MM at the Aero. Best American film of the last 10 years. @SidGrauman, you did it again!" Matthew Roth

"I had the privilege of seeing a screening of The Master last night and I'll let everyone know that PTA's newest film does not disappoint. Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman are both extraordinary and I can't wait to go see the film again in the Fall." Spenser Gabin

"The performances are perfect, the pace incredible, the music generally fitting, the film is an abstract dreamy essay. It is sort of there more to question than answer. It’s a kinda exercise in just picking the audiences brain." Brett Myers via Cigarettes & Red Vines
