From Stacie Hougland: It's Clint Eastwood's turn to make your day, with this week's DVD and Blu-ray release of all five Dirty Harry films in a super-cool box set that contains the films and documentary about Clint Eastwood on disc, plus a 40+ page hardcover book, poster cards, never-before-seen production notes, a wallet with Detective Harry Callahan's ID and metal badge, and a map of San Francisco that shows where the Scorpio killer claimed his victims in the original Dirty Harry.
And how many people get to say they watched the bad-ass with the giant gun kick butt with no remorse alongside Eastwood himself? The actor/director and a few hundred guests including Jon Voight, Crash writer Paul Haggis, Jimmy Smits, Donna Mills, Tyne Daly, director John Landis and more celebrated the release with a reception and Dirty Harry screening last week at the Directors Guild in Los Angeles. Eastwood introduced the film. "What do I say to an audience that's coming to see a 38-year-old movie? Either I got into the wrong theater, or they have a certain nostalgia about this. I certainly do,” he said, eliciting a standing ovation.
The films have been digitally restored and remastered, and look so good they might have been made yesterday. As for the bonuses, each disc is loaded with new material: commentaries by the films' directors, film critics, original trailers...anything and everything you wanted to know about Eastwood, his career, these movies and the Dirty Harry character is here. I found two featurettes of particular note: "Violence in Cinema" examines just that, with lots of shoot-'em-up clips from these movies and others; and "The Politics of Dirty Harry," which looks at the ethical themes of the series. So tell me...feeling lucky yet?
