DVD of the Week: ‘Star Trek!’ Plus ‘Brüno,’ ‘Gone With the Wind’ Gift Set, a Kevin Smith Collection and ‘Fight Club’ BD

The best film of summer (and, some may argue, the year) hit video store shelves this week, and it really doesn’t get better than this when it comes to DVD/BD. Sure, Trek series fans might complain about J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek vision not being exactly faithful to the show, but that’s why they call it a reboot—and with terrific performances from the entire cast (including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban) and a well-conceived storyline, it earned every one of its 375 million bucks, in my book. As for the transfer itself, the colors are vibrant, the effects spectacular, the sound booms and hums with pitch-perfect fidelity and there’s no unevenness going from loud action scenes to soft dialogue.

DVD Extras (2-disc version): deleted scenes, creating the film’s aliens, making-of featurettes. BD Extras: Designing the starships, planets, props and costumes; a look at Gene Roddenberry; gag reel. Both versions will feature a home entertainment first: A 3-D holographic tour of the U.S.S. Enterprise onscreen.
Also new this week:
Brüno As the flamboyantly gay fashionista character he created for Da Ali G Show, Sacha Baron Cohen is about as outrageous as he was in Borat. Here Bruno ambushes politicians, fashion icons, anti-gay Christian activists and celebrities like Paula Abdul. Best Extra: 1 hour of deleted and extended scenes.
Thirst From the director of Old Boy comes this eye-catching, brutal, surprisingly funny love story between a priest who becomes a vampire and his friend’s wife, who uses seduction to convince him to help her kill her husband. (DVD only)
My Sister’s Keeper Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin star in this tearjerker about a family torn apart by the choices they make when they learn their daughter has cancer. Here's an exclusive clip from the DVD.
