DVD of the Week: 'Monsters vs. Aliens'

Giving Pixar a run for the money, Dreamworks channels 1950s B-movies in this animated spoof of vintage sci-fi, with terrific voice work by Hugh Laurie, Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen and Will Arnett as four underdogs tasked with saving the planet from aliens.

When Susan (Witherspoon) encounters an extraterrestrial projectile that suddenly turns her into a 50-foot tall woman, she's taken to a super-secret prison where mutants like her are hidden. When an alien invasion becomes imminent, the government enlists Susan and her fellow monsters to defend Earth. With some great set pieces (the destruction of the Golden Gate Bridge is somethin', as is watching a giant Susan careen through San Francisco using cars as roller skates), sight gags and rapid-fire jokes, a good time will be had by all.
