DVD of the Week: 'Law Abiding Citizen'; Plus: 'Good Hair' and More

This week’s featured DVD, Law Abiding Citizen, stars Gerard Butler as Clyde Shelton, a devoted family man who witnesses his wife and daughter be brutally murdered during a home invasion. The criminals are caught, but the real killer walks thanks to a plea deal with upstart assistant D.A. (Jamie Foxx). Does Clyde sit still for all of this? Nope—10 years later he embarks on a vigilante rampage against the guy who got away as well as everyone on the side of the law who helped him in a string of assassinations that would make Saw’s Jigsaw proud.

Law Abiding Citizen Sure it’s far fetched and probably not the warm-fuzzy date movie you want to see on a Friday night, nor is it going to serve as commentary on our judicial system. That said, it’s an entertaining, violent, gory thrill ride for people who like such guilty pleasures (and okay, I admit, that’s me). The two-disc BD contains both the theatrical cut and the unrated director’s cut, with 11 minutes of unseen footage, plus extras like “The Justice of Law Abiding Citizen.”

Good Hair Chris Rock brings his particular form of comedy to this funny, insightful and sometimes serious documentary about African Americans and their “relationship” with their hair. He keeps it light and fun, while still making his point about the expense and even risks of chemical treatments, and proves himself a darn good interviewer of celebs and regular people alike.
Black Dynamite If you’re a fan of blaxploitation and spoofs thereof, run, don’t walk, to the video store and pick this up pronto. Michael Jai White co-stars and co-wrote this inspired ridiculousness, playing a nunchuck wielding, cliché-ridden tough guy out to rid the ghetto of heroin and malt liquor. Production values are through the roof—this movie has 1972 down to a T.
Coco Before Chanel The early years of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, from her beginning as an orphan to the time when she became the legendary couturier, convincingly played by Audrey Tautou.
