'Downton Abbey' Star Cast As 'Cinderella' in Disney's Latest

A Downton Abbey star is joining Cate Blanchett in Disney’s live-action version of Cinderella.

Lily James, who plays Lady Rose MacClare in the PBS smash hit, will play the fairy tale princess in the 2014 upgrade, which will be directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh. Blanchett is set to play the evil stepmother, Lady Tremaine, while Richard Madden is rumored to be playing Prince Charming in the film.

The Cinderella screenplay will be credited to Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada, We Bought a Zoo) and Chris Weitz (About a Boy). That’s reason enough to get excited, but pairing Branagh with Blanchett and a powerful newcomer like James makes this a must-see for families.

James’ credits outside of Downton Abbey include Wrath of the Titans (2012), Broken and Fast Girls. How do you think she’ll do as Cinderella?

Disney says more announcements will be coming very soon. We’ll keep you posted as this pending fairy tale comes together.
