Djimon Hounsou Cast as Angel of Death in 'Paradise Lost'

Oscar-nominated actor Djimon Hounsou is the latest actor to join the poem-turned-movie Paradise Lost. Hounsou will play Abdiel the Angel of Death in the film based on John Milton’s 17th century poem. Bradley Cooper will play Lucifer while Benjamin Walker is set to play Michael.

The film, directed by The Crow’s Alex Proyas, follows the struggle between fallen angel Lucifer and his nemesis Michael. Lucifer decides to turn against God and Michael becomes furious. The two go to war. Abdiel decides to turn his back on the Devil to tell God of Lucifer’s plan to overthrow heaven.

Proyas has also opened up on certain elements of the movie, saying that it will feature three epic battle sequences which take place in heaven, hell and Eden. He is expected to use performance-capture technology during filming to portray the angels and it will likely be in 3D.

Hounsou seems like a strong choice for Abdiel and the use of performance-capture technology (and Cooper as Lucifer) is certainly intriguing. We’ll have to wait a while before we get our first look though as Paradise Lost is slated for a late 2013 release.
There are still a bunch of main characters yet to be cast including Gabriel (second in rank to Michael and guardian of the Garden of Eden), Ithuriel and Zephon (the two angels sent by Gabriel to find Satan in the Garden of Eden) and Raphael (the angel God sends to warn Adam and Eve about Satan) along with a slew of fallen Angels.

For now though, what do you think of Hounsou as Abdiel?
