“Let’s go bring back summer!”
No, that’s not studio heads wishing that the blockbuster season still powered massive box office receipts. It’s a snowman named Olaf (voiced by Josh Gad) who is part of a mission to stop a blizzard that has threatened a town in the middle of summer. So goes the plot of Disney’s latest, Frozen, the full trailer for which was revealed on Yahoo Movies today.
That’s Kristen Bell voicing Anna, the spunky hero who’s convinced that she can reverse the wintry spell that’s plaguing her town because – dun, dun, dun – her sister is Elsa, the Snow Queen (Idina Menzel). But in classic Disney fashion, there’s a love triangle between Anna and two handsome animated men: Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and the Duke of Weselton (Alan Tudyk).
And then the snowman – the textbook definition of “comic relief.”
Walt Disney Animation Studios frequently divides its attentions, partnering with Pixar, Studio Ghibli and artists like Tim Burton to distribute creative works of cartoon animation. But the studio itself has been on a hot streak that has included such fantastic films as Wreck-It Ralph, Winnie the Pooh and Tangled.
Can Frozen carry that momentum? It’s getting a choice Thanksgiving-weekend release window, and that alone can really help a film find its audience.
