Disney Planning 'Magic Kingdom' Movie

Pretty soon they’re gonna run out of rides! Thanks to the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Disney is now looking at ways to adapt as many of their homegrown, in-the-park projects as they can (and that make sense). Films based on Disney attractions that are already in the works include The Haunted Mansion (which Guillermo del Toro is producing), Tomorrowland, Jungle Cruise and a new adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, with David Fincher directing.

The Magic Kingdom

To tie all of these projects together – including the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean that’s currently in production – Disney is thinking about throwing together a movie based on the Magic Kingdom, which is that section of the park that holds Disney’s most iconic rides. The idea is to use this Magic Kingdom movie as a cross-over platform, much in the same way Marvel is doing for its characters in The Avengers.

There’s nothing that goes beyond the nugget of an idea right now, though a Magic Kingdom script is written. Depending on how these other films do (Jungle Cruise, Tomorrowland), we could see characters from those films hop over to star all together in a Magic Kingdom movie, which Disney is keen on making in the vein of films like Ben Stiller’s Night at the Museum films. Other characters who could make an appearance include Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Pluto. Thing is, because it’s a film that would include so many beloved characters, Disney wants to make sure they get it right so that none of them are tarnished in any way, shape or form. Thus, if this does happen, look for it to take awhile.

Which upcoming movie based on a Disney park attraction do you think has the best chance at succeeding?
