'Die Hard 5' Plucks John McClane's Son From TV's 'Spartacus'

Jai Courtney is not an actor many people are going to be instantly familiar with. He has a few high-profile films currently in development (a confirmed role in Tom Cruise-led thriller One Shot and an attached role in the the Aaron Eckhart-led I, Frankenstein), but unless you're a big fan of the surprisingly addicting Starz original series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, he's likely a complete unknown. If you are a fan of the series, you'll remember Courtney as Varro, the blonde gladiator that Spartacus (the late Andy Whitfield) befriends early on in the first season.

Well now Courtney has signed on for a role that will undoubtedly make him a much more recognizable name. Director John Moore has just cast the actor in A Good Day to Die Hard (AKA Die Hard 5) as John McClane's son, Jack. According to Deadline's sources, the Australian actor beat out the likes of Liam Hemsworth, Aaron Paul, Paul Walker and Milo Ventimiglia for the role, which Fox officially describes as:

"An apple that has not fallen far from the tree, Jack may even be more of a hardass than his father.  Despite their differences, they must work together to keep each other alive – and the world safe for democracy."

And, if you head over to Collider you can see a still from Courtney's screen test with Willis. The two don't look exactly like father and son, but we'll see what make-up and movie magic can accomplish when the film releases on February 14, 2013.
