Earlier, we told you that Robert Downey Jr. had dropped out of the big-budgeted Cowboys & Aliens in order to free up his schedule to possibly shoot a Sherlock Holmes sequel later this summer. While Downey Jr.'s Iron Man pal Jon Favreau is still directing, apparently the search for a replacement didn't take too long as it's being reported that Daniel Craig may step in to play cowboys, Indians and aliens instead.
Craig, who's British, might not be the first person who comes to mind when casting for the role of an American cowboy from the 1800s, but he certainly brings enough rugged manliness to the role and I'm sure he can produce a believable American accent. The only problem with Craig signing on is that this means the next James Bond film probably won't be hitting theaters until 2012…unless folks get their act together fast enough to begin production later this year after Craig is finished with Cowboys & Aliens.
The other issue is that it seems like Downey Jr. and Craig are two completely different actors. One adds a little lightheartedness to all his roles, while the other seems stern, strong and serious. That's why I originally suggested George Clooney, because I feel he has the kind of personality that would match whatever Downey Jr. would've brought to the table.
What do you think? Can Daniel Craig handle this kind of big, epic alien film? Or do you think there are other actors better suited for the role?
