Commitment to Fox May Prevent Marc Webb From Directing 'Amazing Spider-Man 2'

Sony's next step in rebooting the Spider-Man franchise may have hit a bit of a snag. Director Marc Webb, who helmed The Amazing Spider-Man, may not return for the sequel which is currently aimed at a May 2014 release.

Columbia Pictures chief Doug Belgrad told THR that Webb has an obligation to Fox after releasing (500) Days of Summer via Fox Searchlight.

"We'd really like him back, but there are obstacles," Belgrad said.

The Amazing Spider-Man has grossed $530 million worldwide thus far, which prompted Sony to extend their planned reboot from two movies to a full trilogy. Though Webb may not be able to direct the second film, there's a good chance he may have some input as the script for the sequel was in the process of being written while the first film was shooting.

Webb will be working on Age of Rage for Fox Searchlight, a film described as a cross between Children of Men and Lord of the Flies. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic future and tells the story of a virus that kills everyone over the age of 18, forcing a group of teenagers to band together to find a cure.

Belgrad also stated that Webb's lack of experience with special effects proved to be a hindrance during post-production.

"The section where Rhys Ifans' character turns irrevocably into the Lizard. It took several months to figure out, and the filmmakers cut a bunch of scenes. In software parlance, it required a patch," he said.

We're likely to have an answer soon for either Sony or Webb on the director's status for the sequel. If Webb is unable to helm The Amazing Spider-Man 2, who do you think should take his place?
