Cine Latino: La Diva de la Banda Jenni Rivera Keeps It Real in 'Filly Brown' (Exclusive Clip)

Cine Latino covers, well, all things relating to Latino culture and the movies, every Wednesday.

You may remember hearing a lot of about the indie film Filly Brown late last year, when the untimely death of its star, the popular Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera, shocked and saddened her fans and the Latino world.  It finally comes to limited theaters this Friday, also starring Gina Rodriguez, Lou Diamond Phillips and Edward James Olmos, who executive-produced the film. Filly tells the story of a young hip-hop artist coping with the pains and struggles of having an incarcerated drug-addict mother while trying to find her voice as a rap artist.

Thanks to our friends over at Pantelion Films and Lionsgate we have an exclusive clip with Jenni Rivera and Gina Rodriguez. Watch as Rivera lectures Rodriguez on what it means to "keep it real."

Here's the official synopsis:  Majo Tonorio, aka, “Filly Brown” is a young raw hip-hop artist from Los Angeles who spits rhymes from the heart. With a mother in prison and a father struggling to provide for his daughters, Majo knows that a record contract could be her family’s ticket out. But when a record producer offers her a shot at stardom, she is suddenly faced with the prospect of losing who she is as an artist, as well as the friends who helped her reach the cusp of success.
