Cine Latino: 5 Reasons Why We Love Diego Luna

Cine Latino covers, well, all things relating to Latino culture and the movies, every Wednesday.

Sci-fi fans have been patiently waiting for the release of Neil Blomkamp's Elysium, which opens in theaters this weekend. The film is set in the year 2154 where two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live in a paradise-like space station and the very poor, who must survive harsh conditions in an impoverished planet Earth. Leading the A-list cast is Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster and Diego Luna.

In celebration of Luna's latest big-screen acting project, we're highlighting a few reasons why we’re so enamored with the Mexican actor turned director.

Teaches People Spanish Curse Words

Ever since collaborating with Will Ferrell in Casa de Mi Padre, Luna has been avidly teaching non-Spanish speakers a few necessary Spanish words. He recently sat down with Conan O'Brien to discuss Elysium and a few key Spanish phrases like que pedo and no mames, take a look.

Geeks Out to Star Wars

Yes, Luna loves Star Wars. The actor admits he watched the first two Star Wars movies to prep for Elysium.

Believes in True Friendships

Everyone knows by now that Luna is best friends with actor Gael Garcia Bernal. Their bromance goes back to their childhood days. Back in 2009, Luna told us that Bernal and his parents actually visited him in the hospital when he was born.

"My father told me that they came to visit us at the hospital, but my father is a professional liar. I don’t even know if he remembers when I was born. He has created a whole atmosphere, and in that atmosphere and fantasy, Gael came to visit me with his parents."

Here's Luna's take on friendship—

Trained Salsa Dancer

A few years after performing in Y Tu Mama Tambien and Frida, Luna danced his way into the hearts of many young ladies with Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. Turns of this actor can get kinky in more ways than we thought.

Calls Sean Penn a Good Kisser

When asked who is a better kisser between Gael Garcia Bernal and Sean Penn, Luna proudly gave the smooching title to his Milk costar.

Celebrates Human Rights Activist Cesar Chavez

Luna's upcoming directorial project Chavez is centered around the life of human rights activist Cesar Chavez. Michael Pena stars in the biopic alongside Rosario Dawson and America Ferrera. In a recent interview with the Huffington Post, Luna discussed the inspiration behind Chavez.
