Movies due to open in December – particularly potential launch pads for tentpole franchises – usually don’t wait until October to release their first trailer.
Then again, when you deliver the goods (like Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit just did), it really doesn’t matter WHEN you drop the trailer. People are going to see this, and they are going to get in line immediately for the first screening.
That’s Chris Pine in the title role, filling shoes once occupied by Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck and, most memorably, Harrison Ford in previous Jack Ryan adventures. On our set visit to the London location shoot of Jack Ryan, we learned that this will be a total franchise reboot, and effort to bring Clancy’s spy into a new generation, with Pine leading the way.
Paramount no doubt couldn’t have predicted that the author behind its prose would pass away recently. We can only hope Shadow Recruit honors his legacy.
The cast is spectacular. Keira Knightley stands in as Ryan’s brilliant wife, who – at this stage in their relationship – doesn’t know he’s an operative. Kevin Costner plays Ryan’s mentor, while Kenneth Branagh double dips as the director AND the film’s chief villain.
Though take heed: As the trailer suggests, nothing is what it seems.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is supposed to be in theaters on Christmas Day. I don’t like that the end of this trailer says “Coming Soon” (in the Star Trek font), meaning Paramount might bump this back to 2014 – as has been rumored.
For now, a poster comes with the trailer. Watch the clip. Are you ready for more adventures with Tom Clancy’s supersmart spy?
