Chris Evans Offered Role as Captain America?

UPDATE: Chris Evans has accepted the role of Captain America!

The fanboys are now this close to having the perfect actor play Captain America, but unfortunately the deal is about as done as that raw piece of meat in your freezer. Yes, Chris Evans has officially been offered the role of Captain America, though he hasn't yet accepted because not only is he afraid of taking on another superhero role (Evans played Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch in all three Fantastic Four movies), but he's also a little skeptical of signing on since it means he'd be committed to something like nine films.

Chris Evans as The Human Torch

See, because Marvel is trying to maintain continuity in all their franchises – eventually setting up a multi-character bonanza with The Avengers in 2012 – so they need their actors and actresses to sign on for multiple films, that way they don't have to switch folks out and drive the fans all nutso. Both Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson recently committed to such deals, and Evans would need to do the same since they'd potentially want at least three Captain America films, potential cameos in other Marvel films and his participation in at least one Avengers movie.
With all that in mind, it's not hard to see why Marvel is having so much trouble casting the role, but at the same time whoever signs on will take home a very pretty penny. The role of Captain America could also help someone like Evans leap up onto the A-list, which is something he hasn't managed to do yet.
And he'd be a great fit for the role, too, especially since, like Downey Jr., he brings a fun, charismatic vibe to the part. Ya know, he's not some dull, wooden actor like Sam Worthington – you'd actually be able to write some great dialogue for Evans, and he'd deliver it on par with the best of 'em.
What do you think? Is Chris Evans the man for the job, or would you rather someone else?
