Chatter: Who Should Replace Sam Raimi as Director of the Oz Sequel?

Part of the fun of mounting a prequel to The Wizard of Oz and recasting such iconic roles as Glinda the Good or the great and powerful Wizard is that they now exist if you want to create more prequel stories that lead up to the original Oz. And that seems to be Disney’s plan.

Now that Oz the Great and Powerful has banked an impressive $80.3 million over its debut weekend, plans started to be made public for a sequel. The cast, including James Franco, Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis, have been signed to additional Oz movies. And screenwriter Mitchell Kapner has been commissioned by Disney to pen a follow up film. But director Sam Raimi likely plans to sit the sequel out.

Raimi spoke with Bleeding Cool and said:

“I haven’t planned on directing the sequel. I did leave some loose ends for another director if they want to make the picture. I tried to make it a complete ending, so that the audience would be fulfilled, but I also let Evenora and Theodora get away.

I was attracted to this story but I don’t think the second one would have the thing I would need to get me interested.”

So tell us, with an Oz sequel reportedly underway, what stories from writer L. Frank Baum would you like to see the producers tackle? And are you disappointed that Raimi doesn’t want to return for part two? Whom do you think should replace him in the director’s chair? There will be a lot of buzz around an Oz sequel as the project comes together. Share your thoughts with us below.
