My goodness, mon ami. If only Fox would green light this project.
This month's issue of Empire magazine is chock-full of X-Men scoops including an interview with producer Laura Shuler Donner, who says she wants to revamp on of the franchise's biggest characters. Donner has her sights on Remy LaBeau, better known as Gambit. The last time the character was seen on-screen was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But it's the star she's eyeing to play the character that's raising a few eyebrows.
"I'm dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum," Donner said. "That doesn't have to be a great big movie. It's a thief in New Orleans, it's a whole different story. He's on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He's such a sweetheart."
Tatum was originally slated to play Gambit in X-Men: The Last Stand, but the character ended up getting cut out. The actor is a huge fan of the X-Men franchise. While promoting White House Down last year, Tatum said, "I would like to play Gambit. Gambit's my favorite. I'm from New Orleans, around that area. My dad's from New Orleans, and I like to do a Cajun accent. I could do it for real."
While Donner isn't critical of Taylor Kitsch's portrayal of the character in Origins, she hopes to explore more of the character's personality in a new movie.
"Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking guy. He was the punk rock of all the superheroes. He's a thief. He kind of rode the line."
Would you want to see Tatum play the card-slinging mutant?
