If you grew up in the ‘80s, it’s likely that you remember Jem and the Holograms from the Jem cartoon series. It was all about the big '80s hair, brightly colored eye shadow, and fun music. The Jem and the Holograms dolls were all the rage. Thanks to the reinvention of the lead character, Jem, in the new movie opening October 23, you can relive your childhood and introduce your kids to Jem and the Holograms all at the same time. Here’s a fun recipe for an ‘80s-themed cake, complete with an original Jem-themed, yellow-star cake topper.
Ingredients:
1 white cake mix or your favorite white cake recipe prepared according to directions
4 cups favorite white frosting
Red, yellow, purple and blue gel food coloring
1 cup yellow candy melt wafers
Candy sticks
Assorted brightly colored candy including pink sanding sugar and assorted rock-candy pieces
Directions:
Preheat oven 350 Fahrenheit.
Grease two eight-inch or nine-inch cake pans .
Divide cake mix evenly between four small bowls.
Add a three to five drops of gel food coloring to each bowl so that you have a bowl each of pink, yellow, blue and lavender cake mix.
Get creative and add a few spoonfuls of each color in each cake pan.
Lightly swirl the batter together with a butter knife or toothpick.
Bake 25-35 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
While the cake is baking, melt the candy wafers according to package directions.
Carefully place warm (not hot) melted wafers into a piping bag.
Place the template provided under a sheet of wax paper.
Using the outline of the template, pipe the shape of the star onto the wax paper.
Carefully fill the outline, taking care to close up any gaps.
Place candy stick on the bottom of the star and cover the stick completely with melted wafers.
Repeat until you use all of the remaining melted wafers; it’s always good to have an extra star on hand in case one gets broken.
Allow stars to cool and set before moving.
They should be stored in an airtight container or packaging in the fridge until the cake is ready to be served.
When cakes have cooled completely frost both layers.
Dust the sides and top edge of the frosted cake with sanding sugar.
Add assorted candies to the cake as decoration.
Store the cake covered in the refrigerator until ready to be served.
Before serving add the star to the cake by inserting the end of the candy stick into the top of the cake.
Serve immediately.
