Casting: Wolverine Confirmed for 'X-Men: Days' and Ricky Gervais Joins the 'Muppets' Sequel

We’ve been saying for weeks that you can’t do X-Men: Days of Future Past properly without Wolverine, which means the pending sequel needs Hugh Jackman on board.
Thankfully, Bryan Singer agrees.
The director confirmed on Twitter that Jackman, whom he hired to play Wolvie many years ago, has been added to the growing ensemble for Future Past. “Very excited! More to come,” Singer said, leaving the door open to some extremely interesting casting decisions.
The plot of Future Past, for instance, connects the ensemble from the recent First Class film with members from Singer’s original X-Men trilogy. As laid out in the books, it involves time travel, with Kitty Pryde from the future must warn X-Men in the past about a possible threat.
Does that mean that Ellen Page will be asked to reprise her role as Pryde, whom she played in Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand? Will they rewrite to funnel that plot point through another character? Or will Singer, who is taking over for Matthew Vaughn, simply recast the part?
It’s unclear at the moment, though we’re excited because Future Past is moving fast. As for Jackman, he’s lined up to play the razor-clawed hero once again in The Wolverine, a sequel to his own origin story, in a thriller that will be in theaters on July 26, 2013.
And he’s extremely busy promoting his Oscar-contending musical Les Miserables, which opens in theaters in Dec. 25. If you haven’t yet seen Jackman singing with our own Dave Karger as part of Fandango’s new The Frontrunners series, it’s an absolute must-watch.
The star of any Muppets movie, obviously, is the Muppets themselves. But Kermit, Fozzie and Miss Piggy need human celebrities to interact with, and they have found an extremely funny co-star for their next feature.
Ricky Gervais confirmed on Twitter that he has been added as the lead for the Muppets sequel, saying, “I have the biggest trailer but Kermit will spend some time in my sink.”
This isn’t the first time Gervais and the Muppets have crossed paths. The comedian filmed scenes with Elmo for an episode of Sesame Street. And Gervais filmed a deleted scene that didn’t make the cut in the most recent Muppets movie.
Jason Segal took the lead role in 2011’s Muppet reboot, though he was joined by such marquee names as Amy Adams, Chris Cooper and Rashida Jones. Given the penchant for Muppets movies to overload on clever celebrity cameos, you can bank on more names being added around Gervais in the coming weeks.
The Muppets 2 is slated for a 2013 release date, though no date is set at the moment. For now, do you like adding Gervais and his unique sense of humor to the Muppet show?
