'Candy Land' Writers Compare Movie to 'Lord of the Rings' ... But with Candy

The next wave of Hollywood adaptations will officially hit board games when Battleship debuts next summer, though others are also in the works, including a movie based on the Ouija board and one on the game Candy Land (still holding out hope for Chutes and Ladders, too, since it totally has potential to become the firefighting blockbuster we never asked for but always wanted). So, yeah, Candy Land is on its way, or at least it has a screenplay from Kung Fu Panda 2 writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger. They spoke to EW recently, comparing their version of Candy Land to -- wait for it -- Lord of the Rings. The exact quote: "We envision it as Lord of The Rings, but set in a world of candy.”

Sounds kind of cool on paper, but I can't be the only one who feels it'll be hard to take an action-adventure movie seriously when it's set in a world full of candy. How can you not laugh while our characters square off in a life-threatening duel using pieces of licorice?

Berger adds, "“We don’t see it as a movie based on a board game, although it has characters from that world and takes the idea of people finding themselves in a world that happens to be made entirely of candy where there are huge battles going on. We are going for real comedy, real action, and real emotions at stake.”

Huge battles? Really? With candy? So ... are massive fleets of soldiers throwing marshmallows at each other? Will this film teach us how deadly a yummy cupcake can be when used to suffocate an enemy soldier? Hey, we like our candy as much as the next guy, but we like to enjoy it without fighting for our lives. Your thoughts?
